No other winemaker on the Douro is as sensitive to tannins as Jorge; no wonder he was repeatedly declared the best winemaker in Portugal and his wines regularly receive first-class reviews.
Together with Meao, Dona Maria and Manoella, this wine certainly belongs to the top of the Douro. Sour cherries and red currants are the hallmark. Overwhelming, almost overwhelming nose of red fruit, plus rich black cherries, luscious blueberries and chocolate souffle. In the mouth dense, lush, voluptuously aromatic, but at the same time a finesse of the extra class. California with Burgundy and Cabernet Franc from the Loire. Plus something exotic, orange peel with rich blackthorn and sour cherries underneath, passion fruit, mango and grapefruit. The rich black cherry contrasts with blueberry, chocolate, earth and blackcurrant, the balance of excitement is almost perfect. Isn't that more Pomerol than Burgundy? The blueberries then lose their dominance and black cherries take over in a nice unsweetened form. The initial taste is clearly determined by the tight structure, under which you can taste the dry soil of the vineyard. Its depth is intoxicating, but it takes time to discover. Clear edges, freshness, finesse and fruit, harmony in perfection. Its complexity makes it one of the truly great wines, whether on the Douro or anywhere in the world. This is incredibly complex and layered. The mouth is completely covered with explosive aromas in the aftertaste, the taster stands for a positive shock. Salt and minerality complete the dramatic two-minute finish, which culminates in harmony after another minute of relaxation. A wine can hardly be much more complex than the Poeira.

The most talented winemakers also tend to spread their tentacles wide. Sandra Tavares da Silva makes the table wine for both Domini and Quinta do Vale Dona Maria as well as having established her own Pintas label with her husband Jorge Serodio Borges who made wine at Dirk Niepoort’s Quinta de Passadouro until April 2004. Quinta de la Rosa’s winemaker also has his own Quinta da Terra Feita de Cima and makes quite a different style of Douro, crisper than most, under his label Poeria
